SF Giants
As the Giants prepare to play our most hated rivals, the LA Dodgers, tonight to start off the NLDS, I learned that this is the first time both teams have met in the postseason since moving to the West coast (thanks Chris)! Because of my grandpa, baseball became my first love. The Giants were so accessible when he immigrated here with 80 home games a season. As time went on, my interest moved to other sports, but it was the SF Giants that I’ve been to the most games to, especially when Pacific Bell Park (then AT&T, now Oracle) were just a N Judah ride away.
From Gilroy garlic fries, to Coca-Cola slides, Lou Seal dancing on the field, kayaks in the Bay hoping to catch Bond’s record breaking homeruns, watching the game for free from the field level viewing area, the ridiculous wind tunnel, and the post-game seagulls enjoying the leftover nachos… the memories were always there. With the Giants winning 3x world series within a span of 5 years, even more memories were created from the riot celebrations and burning muni busses to Aubrey Huff’s rally thong. The energy of a condense populated city like San Francisco and all neighboring counties (not you Alameda / Oakland) had such electrifying buzz. Just high-fiving random strangers for weeks. It was amazing times.
Growing up in the 90s and 2000s with JT Snow, Jeff Kent, and of course Barry Bonds and the upsetting defeat to the Anaheim Angels (at the time) in the 2002 World Series fast forward to sitting in the stands for Lincecum’s debut in ’07 and Posey’s in ’09 and to watching Brian Wilson throw the last strike to win the first WS for the San Francisco Giants (previously NY). I was at SJSU watching on a dorm tv and left my then-gf to rush back on 280 and enter on 19th ave honking to a MUNI platform of people waiting to go to the stadium to celebrate. Keean and I got to watch the night unfold and stayed up until 7am to go right into poll work. Then 2012 with Aaron and taking in the chaos, as it exploded with 2014’s drunken celebrations.
As we prepare for the game, as always:
