APAHM Month
It’s that time of year again, May is ‘Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage’ month. Typically, for the month I’ve been sharing articles and history in the AAPI community, and I will continue to do so, but hoping to do more personal stories. In a year where we’ve seen so much violence and hatred towards the AAPI community, there’s a lot for me to reflect on. Along with historical moments and figures, I will be sharing stories of my family and friends in the AAPI community as well.
If you have a story to share about your family and their immigration story or “growing up in America” moment, please let me know. It would be an honor to listen and share it this month.
“I’m Chinese-American and I’m proud to be. Growing up, it’s not something that I thought I’d really say. It’s not something you really think of. Because growing up in San Francisco, there’s just so many people with different ethnicities and different kinds of walks of life. So when you’re older and realize how much society, how much America, how much things are putting you in a box with martial art movies, different types of food, or like the hot Asian girl. You kind of lose that identity between everything that you just hear. So, I’m looking back and I’m just really proud to be Chinese, I’m really proud of our culture and our identity and all the things that we’ve done for our families and our heritage. I want to keep representing that and keep learning about it.”
